Why is my AC not cooling?

If your AC is running but not cooling, confirm Cool mode, a suitable set temperature, normal airflow and a closed room. Persistent weak or slow cooling can involve dirty filters or coils, high daytime heat load, an outdoor-unit or control fault, refrigerant leakage or incorrect charge, or compressor trouble. A gas refill is not a universal fix; if cooling does not return, the AC should be diagnosed before more work is approved.

AC running but not cooling

Indoor-fan operation only confirms that the unit is moving air. If Cool mode is selected and the room remains warm, restricted heat exchange, outdoor-unit operation, controls, refrigerant condition or compressor performance may be involved. Note whether airflow is strong and whether the outdoor unit starts, but do not open either unit.

AC cooling very slowly

Slow cooling may result from a dirty filter, coil or blower, weak airflow, an open or high-heat-load room, restricted outdoor ventilation, refrigerant trouble or reduced system performance. Close the room, clean only the user-removable filter and compare the pattern under similar conditions. Persistent slow cooling needs inspection rather than a lower thermostat setting.

Split AC not cooling

A split AC depends on the indoor unit, outdoor unit, connecting cable, controls and refrigerant circuit working together. The indoor fan can run even when the outdoor section is delayed, protected or faulty. Share both model labels, any error code and safe photos of both units when requesting diagnosis.

AC not cooling even after gas refill

If cooling did not return after refrigerant work, low refrigerant may not have been the original cause, a leak may remain, the specified refrigerant or charge may need verification, or an airflow, electrical or compressor problem may coexist. Do not request repeated topping-up without diagnosis; keep the earlier service details.

AC not cooling during afternoon

Afternoon heat, direct sun, roof or window heat gain, frequent door opening and hotter outdoor conditions increase the cooling load. Dirty heat exchangers, restricted outdoor ventilation, installation conditions or marginal system performance can make the difference more noticeable. Close and shade the room where practical, then seek inspection if useful cooling cannot be maintained.

AC cooling only at night

An AC may appear better at night because outdoor temperature and solar heat gain have fallen. That does not rule out a fault: restricted airflow, dirty coils, poor outdoor ventilation, refrigerant trouble, installation conditions or unsuitable capacity may become apparent only during peak daytime load. Record the same settings and approximate cooling times during day and night.

AC outdoor unit running but no cooling

Outdoor-fan movement or sound does not prove that the complete refrigeration cycle is operating normally. The compressor may not be operating correctly, or airflow, controls, heat exchange, refrigerant condition or another system fault may prevent cooling. Observe only from a safe location; do not touch pipes, wiring or panels.

AC compressor running but not cooling

Sound or vibration alone cannot confirm that a compressor is producing normal cooling conditions. Poor indoor or outdoor airflow, dirty coils, refrigerant leakage or charge problems, a circuit restriction, controls or reduced compressor performance can all require testing. Do not touch pipework or the electrical compartment to judge compressor operation.

What you can do
without opening the AC.

  1. Select Cool mode—not Fan or Dry—and choose a temperature below the current room temperature. Allow the normal protection delay described in the manual.
  2. Close doors and windows, shade direct-sun windows where practical and note the time, weather and setting when cooling becomes weak.
  3. After switching the AC off safely, clean only the user-removable filter according to the manual. Do not remove covers or touch the coil or electrical parts.
  4. Ensure curtains, furniture or stored items are not blocking the indoor intake or outlet. Note whether airflow changes between fan speeds.
  5. From a safe location only, observe whether the outdoor unit starts, stops repeatedly or makes an unusual sound. Do not touch pipes or pour water on the unit.
  6. If gas refilling or another repair was recently performed, keep the invoice, refrigerant information and model details and note whether cooling improved at any point.

Can I keep running an AC that is not cooling?

Do not run it continuously hoping the fault will clear. Switch it off immediately after burning smell, smoke, tripping, severe noise, heavy ice or water near electrics. Otherwise, record the behaviour and arrange inspection.
