Moisture and dirt on filters, coil, blower or tray
Symptom guide
Why does my AC smell bad?
A musty AC smell often involves moisture, dirt, microbial growth or a drainage issue. A burning or electrical smell is different and requires immediate shutdown. Odours can also enter from the room, drain route or outside air, so cleaning and diagnosis should match the smell, timing and source rather than masking it with spray.
Understand the symptom
AC Bad Smell.
Start with evidence.
Tell us whether the smell is musty, sour, drain-like, smoky, chemical or burnt, and whether it begins immediately or after running. Avoid spraying perfume or cleaner inside the unit because it can obscure the source or affect components.

Several faults can
look the same.
This list is general guidance. The actual cause is confirmed only after the AC is inspected.
Blocked or contaminated condensate drainage
Odour entering through a drain connection or wall opening
Dust heating after long non-use
Electrical overheating or damaged insulation
Safe first checks
What you can do
without opening the AC.
- Remove and clean only the user filter as the manual permits
- Ventilate the room and note whether the smell is present when the AC is off
- Check for visible water leakage or a nearby drain odour
- Switch off immediately if the smell is burnt or smoky
What a visit may check
Classify the odour
Timing, character and whether it comes from the unit, drain or room are established.
Inspect moisture and dirt areas
Accessible filter, coil, blower, tray and drain conditions are checked.
Clean or repair the source
The recommended work targets the source; fragrance is not treated as a repair.
Direct answers
AC Bad Smell,
explained clearly.
Use these answers to prepare useful information for diagnosis—not to open or repair the unit yourself.
Will AC cleaning remove a musty smell?
It can help when dirt and moisture are the source, but drain routing, water retention or room odour may also need correction.
Is a burning smell from an AC dangerous?
Treat it seriously. Switch the unit off at a safe isolation point and do not restart it until inspected.
Can I spray disinfectant into the AC?
Do not spray household chemicals into the unit. They may affect materials, electronics or indoor air. Use a service method suited to the AC.
These symptoms and causes are general information, not a remote diagnosis. Do not open electrical or refrigerant panels. Parts, refrigerant work, price and repair time are confirmed only after inspection.
